Athlete context
BMI is a poor indicator for trained individuals. A 90 kg male at 10 % body fat will register as "overweight" — yet he is leaner and healthier than the average person in the "normal" range.
BMI cannot distinguish between fat mass and lean (muscle, bone, water) mass. For anyone with significant muscle mass — recreational lifters, athletes, bodybuilders — consider body fat percentage via DEXA, BodPod, or skinfold callipers as the meaningful metric. Pair it with waist-to-height ratio (target < 0.5) for a quick visceral-fat check.
For informational purposes only. BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, ethnicity, or sex differences in body composition. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making decisions about your body composition or weight.
